Another Minister enmeshed in NYSC certificate forgery scandal. This time it's Adebayo
Barely a week after former Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun resigned after she owned up to been in possession of a forged NYSC dischage certiticate, another Minister in the cabinet of President Buhari has been accused of forging his NYSC certicate.
According to a new report by Premiumtimes, Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, allegedly failed to participate in the NYSC scheme despite graduating from the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) at age 25. Read the report as Published by Premumtimes below
Another minister serving in President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet has been found to have skipped the mandatory national youth service scheme, an offence that may see him lose his position and earn him jail term.
The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, failed to participate in the NYSC scheme despite graduating from the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) at age 25, PREMIUM TIMES can authoritatively report
The revelation about Mr. Shittu, who is currently angling to become Oyo State governor, is coming to light about a week after Kemi Adeosun was compelled to step down from her post as Nigeria’s finance minister after this medium reported that she skipped national service and then procured a fake exemption certificate to cover her tracks.
Months of discreet checks at the NYSC headquarters showed that the communications minister did not present himself for service after graduation and is yet to do so till date.
Contacted Tuesday, Mr. Shittu admitted that he did not serve but claimed he thought his first political post after graduation could suffice as national service, a claim lawyers and NYSC insiders consider as ludicrous and untenable.
Skipping the compulsory national service is an offence under the NYSC law, punishable with up to 12 months imprisonment.
Employers are mandated by law to always request NYSC certificate of national service from employees as part of the conditions for hiring.
Mr Shittu, born on March 23, 1953, studied law at Ife, graduating in 1978. He proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, qualifying as a lawyer in 1979.
Having earned a bachelors degree at the age of 25, Section 2 of the NYSC Act expects Mr Shittu to have participated in the year-long national service
Section 2 (1) of the NYSC Act mandates all Nigerians who earn degrees or higher national diplomas from tertiary institutions in Nigerian and abroad (effective 1972/73 session) to participate in the scheme.
Those exempted by the law are those who graduated after their 30th birthday, persons with national honours and individuals who serve in the military and intelligence organisations.
Rather than enlist in the national service, Mr Shittu went into politics after graduation, and was, in 1979, elected member of the Oyo State House of Assembly.
The minister said he believed that having been elected lawmaker, he needed not participate in the national service.
He said he deliberatively skipped the NYSC scheme because he was convinced that his membership of the state assembly was itself a “service”.
“The constitution provides for the qualification needed for state assembly members, NYSC is not there,” Mr. Shittu said. “I didn’t need it to become a member of the state assembly, and that is already a service,” he said.
Mr Shittu disagreed with our reporter who laboured to explain to him that the NYSC Act makes participation in the scheme mandatory for all graduates like him and that election or appointment to political office does not qualify as a basis for exemption.
What the Law Says
Mr Shittu’s argument does not appear convincing when placed against the letters of the NYSC law.
Section 2, subsection 1 of the Act makes it obligatory for “every Nigerian” who graduate at the end of academic year 1972-73 and subsequent years, “to make himself available for service for a continuous period of one year from the date specified in the call-up instrument served upon him”.
Subsection 2 of the same section enumerated instances of exemption from the national service, which did not include holding political office, as Mr Shittu claimed.
The four categories of individuals exempted from the national service, according to the NYSC law, are those who graduated above the age of thirty, and those who have served in the armed forces or the Nigeria Police for a period of more than nine months.
The third category covers staff of four security organisations, namely the Nigerian Security Organisation, the State Security Service, the National Intelligence Agency and the Defence Intelligence Service.
Exemption status is also conferred on individuals who bagged national honours before graduation.
Illegalities?
Despite not possessing certificate of national service, Mr Shittu went on from being a state lawmaker, to occupying important government positions, including his current post as minister.
Mr Shittu is a former attorney general and commissioner for justice in his native Oyo State. He also served as member of the Oyo State Judicial Service Commission from 2004 to 2007.
In 2005, he was nominated minister by President Buhari, and later assigned the communications portfolio upon legislative screening.
It is not clear how he scaled screenings by the Oyo State House of Assembly, the SSS, and the National Assembly, who are all expected to screen commissioner and ministerial nominees before their appointment.
Mr Shittu is now aspiring for governorship of Oyo State.
Section 12 of the NYSC Act mandates all employers to demand the national service certificate of prospective employees before hiring.
Section 12 of the Act reads:
“For the purposes of employment anywhere in the Federation and before employment, it shall be the duty of every prospective employer to demand and obtained from any person who claims to have obtained his first degree at the end of the academic year 1973-74 or, as the case may be, at the end of any subsequent academic year the following:-
a. a copy of the Certificate of National Service of such person issued pursuant to section 11 of this Decree
b. a copy of any exemption certificate issued to such person pursuant to section 17 of this Decree
c. such other particulars relevant there to as may be prescribed by or under this Decree.”
Section 13 of the Act also criminalises skipping the national service as it prescribes 12 months imprisonment or fine of N2,000 or both, for such offenders.
Lawyers speak
Lawyers who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES said the minister is in the breach of the NYSC law for skipping the national service.
“His membership of the state assembly is not the same as national service,” said Huwaila Mohammed, a Kano-based practitioner. “He needs to serve, because the section of the law dealing with exemption did not include political office holders like him.”
Another lawyer, Abdul Mahmud, agreed with Ms Mohammed’s position, saying the minister “is a dodger who is in breach of the law”.
He said by the provision of Section 12 of the NYSC Act, Mr Shittu ought to have presented his certificate of national service before he was cleared as minister.
“The provision is clear,” Mr. Mahmud said. “It says (you must serve) before you get any job in the federation.”
Mr Mahmud, who chairs the Abuja-based pressure group, Public Interest Lawyers League (PILL), said Mr Shittu’s “case is worse than that of Kemi Adeosun because he deliberately refused to serve”.
“If we assume as a member of the Oyo House he (Mr Shittu) served, did it not defeat objective 4 (b) stated in Section 1 (4) (b) of the NYSC Act? Members serve in states other than their own,” he said.
The lawyer said Mr Shittu should be arrested immediately by the police and made to face the law.
All positions he has held are illegal and he should return all monies he earned from those posts to government coffers.

''We have moved 10m Nigerians out of poverty''- FG
Minister of Budget and National Planning, Sen. Udoma Udo Udoma, has said that the Buhari-led government has moved 10 million Nigerians out of poverty. Udoma stated this while speaking on arrangements for the 24th Nigerian Economic Summit (NES#24) held at the conference room of the ministry in Abuja today Tuesday September 18th.
He said federal government had taken steps to move over 10 million Nigerians from poverty to prosperity as one of the key priorities of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, ERGP by investing in the people.
According to Udoma, the government had provided 8.96million school children under the Home Grown School Feeding Programme; over 297,000 poor and vulnerable Nigerians supported with cash transfer of N5,000 successfully disbursed more than 308,000 loans of N50,000 and above under the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) and 200,000 Young Unemployed Graduates Empowered through the N-Power scheme , while over 308,000 had been selected for consideration for the second batch.
‘‘We have taken steps towards moving our people from Poverty to prosperity. Indeed, one of the key priorities of the ERGP is investing in our people. That objective has been behind many Government programmes, particularly the Social Investment Programme. Under this programme, we have empowered millions of Nigerian youths, women and children. To combat hunger and achieve food security, we have raised capital provisions for agriculture from N8.8billion in 2015 to N149.2billion in the 2018 budget.
Over N82billion has been disbursed as credit to more than 350,000 farmers under the Anchor Borrowers’ programme. 14 moribund fertilizer blending plants have been revitalized through the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI), with a total capacity of 2.3million metric tons of NPK fertilizer. Nigeria’s milled rice production has increased by about 60% and since 2016 eight new rice mills have been brought into production'' he said
Happy 38th birthday to me.. Yay! Linda Ikeji
Today September 19th, I turn 38 and I can say without any doubt that 2018 has been the best year of my life so far! I became a mum. Something that I always wanted and wondered when it will happen for me.
.
On my 37th birthday last year, I went down on my knees and told God, you've blessed me beyond what I thought was possible but there's something I want more than anything else; to be a wife and a mum before my next birthday. We will talk about the wife one later...but the one that was more important, the one my heart desired the most, he gave to me. My own child. Two days before my next birthday. Dear Lord in heaven, thank you. I don't know what I did, or what I have done to make you continually bless me and answer all my prayers.
.
Above pic shows me trying to catch a glimpse of my son seconds after he was born and placed in my arms. It took me the whole of two minutes to push him out. I recorded it and I've watched the video over and over again in wonder. I thought I would be in the labour room for hours especially because of my age and how people say the older you get, the harder it is to give birth but my son was placed in my arms exactly 2mins 19secs after I began to push. .
.
I saw many comments on here of people praying I deliver like the Hebrew women and your prayers were answered. My delivery went so well. I can't wait to go through this journey of pregnancy and child birth again. By far the most amazing experience of my life. And the guys at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta are the best. . I'll recommend them. .
.
Thank you guys for all the birthday wishes. God bless you and yours and I hope everything you ask God for, He gives to you. May blessings never cease in your life. Amen. Kisses.
.
By the way, I did something crazily crazy for my baby boy. You will hear about it soon!. My mum has been giving me and my dad bad eyes since. Hahaha
Man dressed like a king and sat on a throne at his wake keeping (photos)
A dead man was dressed like a king, complete with a crown, and sat on a throne at his wake keeping and the creepy photos are going viral.
In the photos shared online, the dead man was dressed in all red and a golden crown was placed on his head. He sat on a gold throne in a red background, surrounded by red roses.
He was given pride of place at the front of the hall while family members and friends went up one after the other to sit beside him and say their tributes to him.
Dressing dead people and propping them up to look alive at their wake is fast becoming a trend. Only two months ago, a dead teenager was dressed and propped up to look like he was playing a video game at his lying in state
''Nigerians voted Buhari but cabal is ruling them'' - Saraki
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has once again condemned the leadership style of President Buhari.
While speaking with PDP delegates in Oyo state yesterday September 18th, Saraki who has since declared his intention to run for president on the platform of the PDP in 2019, said Nigerians who voted President Buhari in 2015 had been shortchanged as it was a few people who constitute themselves as a cabal, are the ones running the afairs of the country.
''The President we have now does not understand leadership. We have endured him for more than three years but it is the same thing. Nigerians voted for him (Buhari) but a cabal is ruling the country. That is not what democracy means. This time, let us look for who can do it. In Nigeria today, we do not have unity. What we need in the present world is a digital President. When your president sits with world presidents, he should be able to understand what they are saying. That is why presidents who have visited the country did not stay more than a few hours. But when they know that their host understands them, they will stay longer and explore investment opportunities in Nigeria.” he said
Oyo State government shuts down Obasanjo Farms and 15 other businesses (Photos)
On Tuesday, the Oyo State Government shut down the business premises of Obasanjo Farms, located at Oluyole Industrial Estate, Ibadan and MRS Oil in Ibadan, the state capital city as part of its continued exercise to get companies and corporate organisations to pay their environmental levies.
According to reports, Obasanjo farm is one of the sixteen business organisations that were sealed for defaulting in the payment of the environmental development levy due to the state government.
The exercise, which began on Monday, was carried out by the combined task force teams of the Oyo State Inter-ministerial Enforcement Unit and coordinated by the Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue which saw branches of some banks also sealed.
Locations visited by the task force team included: Dugbe, Eleyele, Podo, Challenge and Onireke areas of the state capital. Some of the other firms affected in the seal up by the task force team on Tuesday included Black Horse, Heinemann Educational Books, Lister Flour Mills, and University Press Limited.
Others were Evans Brother, Brooking House, Group Medical hospital at Mokola, Butterfield bakery, Chicken Republic and Rasmed publicity.
Chairman, Oyo state Board of Internal Revenue (OYBIR), Bicci Alli, while speaking said the exercise became inevitable due to the failure of the affected firms to comply with the state tax laws after series of formal communication failed. Alli stressed that the enforcement will be continuous, warning that all corporate organizations in the state must do the needful and be corporately responsible in line with the laws of the land.
He said “the exercise was not something new and not outside the law. It is within the law. We went to restrain some corporate organizations that failed to pay what is due to Oyo state government after giving due notices, demand notices and even public notices to that effect and they failed to pay.

Offa robbery: Court summons Saraki over fresh criminal complaint
The last has not been heard about the Offa bank robbery in which the senate president Bukola Saraki, has been implicated in.
Yesterday Sptember 17th, a Grade I Area Court in Aco Estate, Lugbe, Abuja, ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, to serve a summons on the Senate President to compel him to face a criminal complaint initiated against him by an Abuja based lawyer and Humanrights activist, Oluwatosin Ojaomo, private lawyer in respect of the bloody bank robbery.
Recall that in April this year, a coordinated bank robbery by a gang in Offa, Kwara state, left over 20 persons dead. Some of the key suspects arrested in connection with the robbery, have confessed to being the political thugs of Saraki.
They alleged that the weapons used during the attack were provided by Saraki for political harrassment but that they converted the arms for robbery.
According to Punch, the criminal complaint marked, CR/196/2018, was said to have been initiated by Ojaomo under Section 89(5) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. According to Ojaomo, Saraki has refused to honor police invitation over the Offa bank robbery and his action is stalling investigation into the matter. Ojaomo approached the court to order the police to issue fresh summon on Saraki. Ojaomo said Saraki's act of not honoring police invitation on the matter is an offence punishable under Section 136 and 149 of the Penal Code Law.
The judge handling the case at the Grade 1 Area Court, Aco Estate, Lugbe, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Abdullahi Garuba Ogbede, had, on September 10 this year, ordered the issuance of a summons on Idris following Saraki’s absence from court.
On Monday, the complainant’s lawyer, E. S. Marcus, said he was informed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Legal Unit of the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, identified as Mahmoud, that the IGP had directed the legal unit to ensure the prompt service of the court papers on Saraki before the next hearing date of October 3, 2018.
“The defendant is not in court. At the last date, the court issued a witness summons on the IGP to come and show cause why the police failed to effect service of the criminal summons, warrant of arrest and other processes on the defendant. The witness summons was served on the Nigeria Police Force by the court’s registry. However, we received a call from DSP Mahmoud of the Legal Department of the Nigeria Police Force headquarters, that the matter has been assigned by the IGP to a particular unit of the NPF to effect the service of the summons on the defendant and arrest him.”
Marcus explained in court on Monday that his client, who was supposed to bear the responsibility of serving Saraki with the complaint, had to resort to seeking the IGP’s involvement in accordance with Section 122 of the ACJA, when it became difficult for him to serve the Senate President.
According to the lawyer, the Inspector-General of Police is required, under the law, to either produce the defendant in court or attend court to explain why the defendant was absent.
He then applied to the court to grant a short adjournment to enable the police to serve the processes on Saraki.
The judge, Ogbede, granted Marcus’ request and adjourned the case till October 3.
The criminal complaint against the Senate President read
“Criminal complaint brought pursuant to Section 89(5) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015. Please, cause a summons for a direct criminal complaint on the defendant on the following terms:
“That you, Dr Bukola Saraki, on or about the 24th day of July, 2018 within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, did refuse to honour the invitation of the Inspector-General of the Nigeria Police Force to report at the police headquarters in FCT, Abuja to answer to an allegation involving the investigation of some criminal suspects involved in a case which the Nigeria Police Force is currently investigating, thereby obstructing a criminal investigation and disobeying a public officer carrying out a lawful responsibility. You thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 136 and 149 of the Penal Code Law, whereas, the complainant is praying the court to charge the defendant accordingly.”

Kemi Adeosun says she resigned because she found out her NYSC discharge certificate was not genuiene
Immediate past Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, in her resignation letter sent to President Buhari today, said she decided to tender her resignation after she became privy to the findings of an online medium that the NYSC discharge certificate she possesses, was not genuine. Recall that in July, Premiumtimes exclusively reported that the former Minister was working with a forged NYSC discharge certificate. Adeosun in her resignation letter, gave her reaction to this allegation. A part of her letter reads
''I have, today, become privy to the findings of the investigation into the allegation made in an online medium that the Certificate of Exemption from National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) that I had presented was not genuine. This has come as a shock to me and I believe that in line with this administration’s focus on integrity, I must do the honourable thing and resign.
Your Excellency, kindly permit me to outline some of the background to this matter. I was born and raised in the United Kingdom, indeed my parental family home remains in London. My visits to Nigeria up until the age of thirty-four (34) were holidays, with visas obtained in my UK passport. I obtained my first Nigerian passport at the age of thirty-four (34) and when I relocated there was debate as to whether NYSC Law applied to me. Upon enquiry as to my status relating to NYSC, I was informed that due to my residency history and having exceeded the age of thirty (30), I was exempted from the requirement to serve. Until recent events, that remained my understanding.
On the basis of that advice and with the guidance and assistance of those, I thought were trusted associates, NYSC were approached for documentary proof of status. I then received the certificate in question. Having never worked in NYSC, visited the premises, been privy to nor familiar with their operations, I had no reason to suspect that the certificate was anything but genuine. Indeed, I presented that certificate at the 2011 Ogun State House of Assembly and in 2015 for Directorate of State Services (DSS) Clearance as well as to the National Assembly for screening. Be that as it may, as someone totally committed to a culture of probity and accountability I have decided to resign with effect from Friday, 14th September, 2018.

A 26-year-old undergraduate, identified as Nura Iliyasu, has mounted a 50-metre mast overlooking the Presidential Vila, Abuja, on a 7-day hunger-protest against what he called bad leadership by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.
According to a report by Daily Sun, while calling on the opposition political parties to unite and produce a formidable candidate that will take over the leadership of the country and salvage the her, Iliyasu said his one-man protest was against “national indirection, pervasive hunger and starvation, un-godly generic poverty, youth redundancy and hopelessness.”
In addition, he is protesting against what he termed “schizophrenic governance, souring foreign-exchange, high commodity prices; dysfunctional refineries and textile industries, elites medical tourism abroad; continued kidnappings and other negativities too numerous to mention.”

51-year old Liberian President, George Weah makes surprise return to football as he played for his country in a match against Nigeria
Liberia president George Weah played in an international friendly for his country on Tuesday - at the age of 51.
Weah, the first African footballer to win FIFA's World Player of the Year award, featured for 79 minutes of a 2-1 home defeat by Nigeria in Monrovia. Liberia arranged the friendly to retire their number 14 shirt, worn by Weah at his playing peak.
The former AC Milan striker, sworn in as president in January, received a standing ovation as he was substituted. Nigeria fielded a reasonably strong team, including Leicester's Wilfred Ndidi and fellow midfielder Peter Etebo, of Stoke City. Ndidi's club-mate Kelechi Iheanacho featured as a second-half substitute.
Etebo took the corner from which Simeon Nwankwo headed Nigeria into a 2-0 lead after Henry Onyekuru - on loan at Galatasaray from Everton - had scored the opener.
The home side pulled one back with a late Kpah Sherman penalty.

''Nigerians will enjoy 24 hours power supply if Buhari is re-elected'' - Rotimi Amaechi
The Minister of Transportation and Director general of the Buhari campaign organization, Rotimi Amaechi has said Nigerians will enjoy 24 hours power supply if President Buhari is re-elected in 2019.
Amaechi disclosed this during an interactive session with the media in Abuja on Tuesday September 11th.
Speaking on why Buhari and the APC government deserves second term, Amaechi said
There is also an improvement in power. We have from 3000megawatt to 7000 but we are distributing 5000 because some of the Infrastructures are not in good state but we are slowly fixing them.
“The expectation is that it should be 24 hours power supply but there will still be a gap but if you give us a second term, that gap will be closed.” he said
Speaking further, the former Rivers state governor said
“Nigerians have taught me a lesson I learnt in politics and that is why nothing bothers me again. The people praising you today, if you see them when you are out of power, you will be shocked. Those singing hallelujah and hosanna will still be the same people to shout crucify him tomorrow.
“We have done much more than transport. In terms of Corruption; this economy was a rent economy. Public money was spent anyhow and it was an economy that was not worked hard for. That is why you see politicians today very rich and one year after government, they are poor. They are like that because they don’t know how to manage the money.
“When Buhari came, he said no and that we cannot continue to spend anyhow. Buhari has not said people should not steal, he has rather kept quiet to see who can steal because there is a consequence for stealing.
“I don’t want to say it has stopped completely but it has reduced. Before, there were so many empty houses in Abuja. People were building and speculating that new politicians will come in and buy but we came in and could not buy because of the economy. So if you say Buhari has not done anything on corruption, you are being most unfair.
“Also, the 2016 budget was 6percent capita but we are doing 20 percent capita now. We are doing 80 percent recurrent and 20 percent capital. We believe that in the next two to three years, we will get to 30 percent capital and we will get there if we reduce the current expenditure and deal with wastage.”
“It is also unfair if Nigerians think the ministry of works is not working. The road to Bonny was abandoned after Obasanjo left government.
“The road was below N39bn but it is now N120bn. When I was Governor, I wrote to federal government under Jonathan that I wanted to do the road for N39bn but they didn’t reply me.
“My final year as governor, energy wrote that they will take care of 50 percent of the bill and I wrote again to the Federal Government but they didn’t reply because I was in APC. Now that the Federal government wants to do it, the cost is now N120bn.
“So, Buhari government is dealing with corruption, building roads. The worst roads in Nigeria used to be between Uyo and Calabar but it has been awarded.
“The road to Enugu too that people are complaining about, contractors are working on the roads already. The work may be slow but they are working. When we came oil was $28 per barrel and our budget was $35 and suddenly it dropped but the Minister of Budget managed it for us to survive. Now oil is $74 but we still have not reached $110. If we get to that, things will change rapidly. Also the Ilorin-Jebba road. So many roads have been awarded.
Donald Trump blasted for making a fist pump gesture on arriving 9/11 memorial
US President Donald Trump has been criticized for making a bizarre double fist pump gesture as he arrived at a 9/11 memorial service.
Trump was pictured grimacing as he made the triumphant gesture shortly after touching down in Shankville, Pennsylvania, near where United Flight 93 crashed after it was hijacked by four Al_Qaeda terrorists on board, as part of the tragic September 11 attacks.
Stephanie Tittle blasted Trump for the signal, tweeting: This is not an exclamation point day. This is not a fist pump day. You sully the solemnity of this day. History will not be kind to you.
"But we will #NeverForget those who lost their lives and those who gave so much to help so many on that day, and the days that came after."

But people felt the tweet was too insensitive and could have been better worded, especially coming from a President.
24-hours after, Femi Otedola yet to react to news of him running for Governor of Lagos State in 2019
It's 24-hours since news broke that Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Forte Oil, Femi Otedola, is set to run for the governorship seat of Lagos state under the Peoples Democratic Party platform.
According to Dele Momodu, ' PDP offered Femi Otedola the governorship ticket and he's accepted and personally confirmed to The Boss newspaper'.
Femi Otedola who is always quick to react to news about him to confim or dispell rumours has however remained quiet.
Back in May 2018 when news made rounds that he's seeking to run for office after a video of him in a 'Molue' bus went viral, Otedola immediately took to Twitter to say, 'my attention has been drawn to a news piece where false information from a parody account was posted. I am a man of the people and I will always be on the side of the masses but I am stating clearly via this medium that I am not running for office'.
He went on to declare his support for Governor Ambode saying, 'the Governor of Lagos State is doing a commendable job and Lagosians should be proud of him'.

Speaking to The Nation, He said: “I am an Aiye member (Black Axe). I have been in the cult for about two years. I was told that Davido was a member and if I joined, I will be able to meet him.
“It was the guy who initiated me that said so. He said he worked for Davido and that it will be easy access. But since I joined, I have not met Davido. They told me I’ll become a very popular musician but see where I am now.
“I am renouncing my membership of Aiye. I will never belong to any cult again. They should look at my face very well. They will never see me in their midst again.
“I lived at Oniru in Lekki. I used to be a domestic help. Since I joined, I have not done anything bad. I habe not killed anybody. I just wanted to be a famous musician.

Another suspect, Biodun Alade, 22, said he joined his own group about four months ago.
It was also reported that several others denied being cultists, insisting that they were arrested during random raids carried out by policemen in their neighborhoods.

Saraki ends the beef between Senator Adeleke and his rival, Dr Ogunbiyi ahead of September 22 Osun State guber elections
Senate President Bukola Saraki has brokered peace between the two Osun governorship candidates, seeking to contest on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Saraki who was recently appointed as the Chairman of the 2018 PDP Osun State Governorship Election Campaign Council reached a peace agreement between Senator Ademola Adeleke and Dr Akin Ogunbiyi.
According to the Senate President, the move was to show that the party is united.
"Following marathon meetings today in Abuja, I am pleased to announce that we have a signed agreement between PDP gubernatorial candidate, Senator Adeleke and his rival, Dr. Ogunbiyi. As we approach the September 22, 2018 governorship election, our party moves forward as one" he tweeted.
''Saraki’s presidential aspiration, a huge joke'' - APC
The ruling party, APC, has described the presidential bid of senate president, Bukola Saraki, as a huge joke. Recall that last week, Saraki at a function organized by the Not To Young to Run group in Abuja, declared his intention to run for president in 2019.
In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, the APC said Saraki's is an abysmal failure and that his eight year in office as Kwara state governor, is proof of how he will manage Nigeria if given the opportunity. The statement in part reads
''By virtue of Saraki’s antecedents, he is an abysmal failure and is totally incompetent to offer himself as a candidate for the leadership of Nigeria. Saraki was a two-term Governor of Kwara State and Senate President in the last three years. What were his performance records in these two assignments? As Kwara State Governor, was his Shonga Agricultural Programme not a white elephant project in which hundreds of millions of state funds was sunk into? The infrastructure, particularly roads network in Kwara State in which the present administration remains under his tight grip and political machinations long after leaving office, remains deplorable while state resources is mismanaged through corrupt enrichment.” he said

''I was initiated into robbery in a mosque'' - 13-year-old suspect says
The Lagos state police command yesterday paraded a 13-year-old boy simply identified as Ajayi who told journalists that he was introduced into robbery in a mosque where he was sleeping in the Jakande area of the state.
Ajayi who was paraded alongside his accomplice, Balogun (13), said he started living in the mosque after his father divorced his mother and married another woman.
Immediately after his father remarried, he took him to the mosque and abandoned him there. Without any money to feed, Ajayi said he had no other option but to start stealing after he was initiated by some persons he met in the mosque.
''After a while, the management of the mosque sent every one of us sleeping in the mosque out. The leaders of the mosque said we constituted nuisance. After that my father took me to his workshop where he sew clothes and asked me to be sleeping in the shop, instead of taking me home. It was in my father’s shop where I was sleeping that I met my accomplice and we became friends. He then told me that his elder brother needed a laptop. He said if I come across someone who wanted to sell I should contact him.
“One fateful day, I was walking on a street at Jakande Estate when I saw an empty Disc Jockey (DJ) shop opened. I went straight into the shop, picked the laptop and went away. Thereafter, I called my friend that I have a laptop for his brother. After I had stolen the laptop, I took it to my friend’s elder brother and I told him I was selling it for N10,000 but he said he could only afford N3,000. Because I was hungry, I agreed to the price. He gave me N2,000 and asked me to come later for N1,000.
It was because my stepmother said she did not want to see me that led me into robbery. I regret my action. I was later arrested by the police on the street when I was going to buy food I wanted to eat on Tuesday last week about 8p.m.”
On his own, Balogun said he became friends with Ajayi in school and they also lived on the same street at Jakande area.
“When he brought the laptop to me, I asked him where he got it from. He told me he stole it; I asked him to return it to where he picked it from that I didn’t want to see the laptop. Instead of returning the laptop to where he stole it from, he went to sell it to another person. I was going on an errand when police arrested.”
Also arrested by the police was 27 year old Babatunde Adejagun who bought the laptop. When interrogated, Babatunde said that one of his friend, Lawal Wasiu, who introduced the boy to him.
“It was where they were fixing phone at a shopping complex at Jakande that they approached my friend that they had a laptop they wanted to sell. My friend then brought them to me. When they brought it to me, they said it was their brother who is a DJ that owned it but he asked them to sell. It was then I decided to buy it from them. They told me initially that they were selling it for N8,000 but I told them I could only afford N3,000. They agreed and I gave them N2,000. I told them to come back for the balance of N1,000.” he said
The state Commissioner of Police, CSP Edgal Imohimi who paraded the suspects before newsmen, said all the suspects would be arraigned in court after investigation has been concluded.

Here's what President Buhari said at the opening ceremony of the high-level dialogue between Chinese and Nigerian leaders in Beijing
President Buhari who is currently in China delivered an opening speech today at FOCAC.
According to the Nigerian leader, ' China is today, the largest investor in the sub-region in both private and public sectors covering areas such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture, mining, healthcare. China also provides significant assistance in emergency humanitarian aid and response to climate change'.
See his full speech below...
On behalf of the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), I wish to express our appreciation to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China for the warm hospitality extended to our delegations since our arrival in China.
2. The participation of so many Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS at this High-Level Dialogue between Chinese and African Leaders and Business Representatives is a demonstration of the excellent relations between China and ECOWAS.
3. We are happy to welcome to the FOCAC family, two Member States of ECOWAS; the Republics of The Gambia and Burkina Faso as well as São Tomé and Principe.
4. It is therefore worthy of note that for the first time, all ECOWAS Member States are participating in a FOCAC Summit.
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen.
5. The ECOWAS region accounts for some 30% of Africa’s population and GDP.
6. ECOWAS Member States are presently embarking on policies and strategies to stabilise and strengthen internal growth. Our Member States are making efforts at diversifying their economies and developing specific policies targeting the most vulnerable groups, in order to ensure more inclusive growth. In this regard, Member States will continue to encourage Chinese State-owned companies and entrepreneurs to invest in our sub-region.
7. I take this opportunity to convey the appreciation of ECOWAS Member States for China’s increasing investment in our sub-region with the aim of building a prosperous and shared future. China is today, the largest investor in the sub-region in both private and public sectors covering areas such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture, mining, healthcare. China also provides significant assistance in emergency humanitarian aid and response to climate change.
8. Various construction projects are now ongoing in the sub-region, including the construction of railway projects, power infrastructure, airports and numerous roads through Chinese financing.
9. While it is pertinent to mention that Member States of ECOWAS are at different stages of development, President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to our sub-region has highlighted the need for even closer collaboration to enable more Chinese investment to support the cause of regional integration and development.
10. We should also realise that while China’s help is vital, the main push to transform our economies must come from our own efforts and commitment.
11. ECOWAS also welcomes more Chinese tourists to visit West Africa. This will enhance people-to-people exchanges, especially now that Member States are getting involved in the Belt and Road Initiative. Our sub-region is endowed with enormous tourism potentials. With China’s support, tourism related infrastructure should be developed to empower our citizens, create more employment opportunities among the teeming population and eliminate poverty.
12. We would also request visa facilitation for our businessmen and women, and students who seek to visit China.
13. ECOWAS Member States will continue to pay emphasis on encouraging more foreign direct investment in the sub-region. To this end, Member States are looking at the opportunities that the China International Import-Export initiative will offer our exporters to gain market access for their goods and services in China. Such an opportunity will help in diversifying the economy of our sub-region from over reliance on primary agricultural and mineral products and subsequently correct the huge trade imbalance between China and the ECOWAS sub-region on a win-win basis for both parties.
14. Excellencies, while expressing our appreciation for the strong engagement of China with the ECOWAS sub-region, I also wish to thank President Xi Jinping for the pledge to build a befitting Secretariat for the Commission.
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen.
15. Let me reiterate the commitment of ECOWAS Member States to deepening and strengthening institutions in the sub-region, through good governance, the fight against corruption, combating terrorism, violent extremism and organised crime. These are necessary actions if the right conditions for sustainable economic growth in West Africa are to be achieved.
16. Finally, on behalf of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the ECOWAS, I wish the High-Level Dialogue and Conference successful deliberations and a fruitful outcome.
I thank you all for your attention.
